How to use the Day/Night Palette Generator
- Drop a sprite, tile or scene.
- Turn on "keep lights lit" if it has windows, torches or crystals that should glow at night.
- Download each time of day, all four on one sheet, a day-cycle GIF, or the palettes JSON.
Using it in your game
Swap palettes at runtime with the from/to colours in the palettes JSON (a palette-swap shader or a colour lookup), so one set of sprites covers every time of day.
Frequently asked questions
How does it make the night version?
Each colour of your image is graded towards the time of day (warmer at dawn and dusk; bluer, darker and less saturated at night, with shadows leaning towards a cool colour) and mapped to exactly one new colour.
Why does the palette size stay the same?
Because every colour becomes one new colour, a 16-colour sprite is 16 colours at every time of day. The Palettes JSON lists every from and to colour, so your engine can swap palettes at runtime instead of storing extra sprites.
What does "keep lights lit" do?
Bright, saturated colours (lit windows, torches, glowing crystals) stay close to their day colour at night. It is off by default because gold and bright paint can look like lights too.
Can I use it from Claude Code or Cursor?
Yes. The free day_night_palettes tool on the Voidless MCP server returns the same four images and palettes.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, with no account and no limit.
