How to use the 8-Direction Sprite Sheet Organizer

  1. Drop 5 or 8 direction images (names like hero_down.png or hero_NE.png land in the right slot), or split one sheet.
  2. With 5 views, the left side is mirrored from the right for you.
  3. Choose the layout (one row, 3×3 compass or RPG Maker rows), the direction order and the alignment.
  4. Download the Sheet PNG and its JSON.

Using it in your game

Slice the sheet by its cell size in your engine and pick the frame from the movement direction; the JSON lists which cell holds which facing.

Frequently asked questions

Why only five directions?

Most top-down and isometric characters look the same flipped, so artists draw down, down-right, right, up-right and up, and the game mirrors those for the left side. The tool does that mirroring for you.

Which layouts can I export?

Eight cells in one row (in three common orders), a 3×3 compass grid where each view sits where it faces, or RPG Maker-style rows with down, left, right and up first and the diagonals after.

How does it know which image is which direction?

It reads the filename, so hero_down.png, hero_NE.png or walk-southwest.png go to the right slot. Anything it cannot read fills the next empty slot, and you can swap or replace any slot by hand.

What is in the JSON file?

The cell size, layout, columns and rows, and for every direction its index, column, row, pixel position and whether it was mirrored, so you can map directions to frames in code.
